A PLACE TO BEGIN

MELENG, ASSAM

Some places
stay with you.

A home above the ground, family in the garden, and tea growing all around it. A little world rooted in Meleng.

ROOTS

Where the story begins.

SELECT A PLACE TO EXPLORE
A wooden bungalow stands on iron pillars, a woman in an orange saree sitting on its stair. Father sits on the red motorcycle and now and then takes his granddaughter for a ride; mother waters the flower garden; two adult brothers play cricket while a cow and calf graze nearby, and a dog and puppies roam the lawn. Their wives share a garden swing, with a girl in one lap, beside a pond with swimming and jumping fish. Owls and a snake live in the banyans, cherry petals fall in the breeze, and a smiling sun and soft clouds sit above the tea estate that surrounds the garden.

BEHIND THE SCENE

A memory.
Not a replica.

This world is inspired by Neelesh's memories of Meleng Tea Estate, near Jorhat in Assam. It brings different generations together as a memory collage, not as one literal moment in time.

Father wears his cream shirt and black trousers; now and then he takes Neelesh's daughter, six or seven here, for a ride round the lawn on his motorcycle. Mother gardens. The brothers are now represented as adults around thirty; their wives share a swing beside the pond, with a little girl in one lap.

The child appears in different collected moments, not a single literal instant. Faces, clothing details and the garden remain stylised interpretations. The pond, smiling sun, clouds and cherry blossoms are requested additions to this imagined world.

Follow a number

Numbers lie on the grass beside each place. Select one, or the place itself, to move closer. In a close-up, the glowing corner flower with a return arrow brings you back to the whole garden. Labels stay below the scene, not over faces.

Take it slowly

Selected flower-bed plants bend in varied gusts; others stay still. Pause freezes the swing, fish, petals, clouds, people, markers and other ambient motion together. Reduced-motion preferences start everything still.

Only the beginning

This is the portfolio home. Work, About, Blog and Contact are in the site navigation, and never require exploring the scene.

Beyond the garden.

The garden above is where the story begins: a memory of growing up at Meleng Tea Estate in Assam. The rest of this site is about the work.
